The biggest thing anyone leaves behind at a festival is the one nobody photographs, and once you have made a garment yourself you cannot look at a cheap tent without seeing the same failure.
What is actually the biggest piece of festival waste?
The tent. Not the glitter, not the cups, not the wristbands. The Association of Independent Festivals estimates around 250,000 tents are abandoned at UK music festivals every year, and their 2018 Ten-Year Report put it at 9.7% of attendees at their member events walking away from one, which they worked out as roughly 875 tonnes of plastic across those festivals alone. Dr Aurore Julien, who assesses events with A Greener Festival, has put tents at around 17% of UK festival waste going to landfill. That is the biggest, most concrete, least arguable thing in the field, and it is a tent, not a bin.
We have been on festival fields since 1999, when the first things we made were sold off a stall before there was ever a shop. You get a particular eye for a badly built object standing in a field at eight in the morning. WRAP put it plainly last year: a typical four-person tent weighs 4.8kg and holds about as much plastic as 22 vinyl LPs, or 200 half-litre bottles, or getting on for 9,000 straws. People carry it in, sleep in it twice, and abandon it, and it goes to landfill as one solid lump.
Why does a cheap tent fail the same way a cheap garment does?
Because both were built to be thrown away, and you can read that intention in the object before it ever fails. A tent sold to last one weekend is stitched, poled and priced to last one weekend. The seams are the giveaway, the same as they are on a garment. We cut and sew for a living, so we notice where a maker has decided the thing does not need to survive.
Glastonbury says over 98% of its tents have gone home after each festival since 2019. That is the festival's own figure rather than an independently audited one, but the direction of it is the point. When people are told plainly to take the tent home, most of them do. The tent was never a recycling problem waiting for a better bin. It was a durability problem decided at the point of manufacture, which is exactly the decision we make or refuse to make every time we set a specification.
What is MOOP, and why is a loose sequin a construction fault?
MOOP stands for Matter Out of Place, and it is Burning Man's own operational term for anything that was not originally of the Black Rock Desert: cigarette butts, bottle caps, glowsticks, sequins, feathers, broken debris. It sits under the Leaving No Trace principle Larry Harvey wrote into the event's ten principles in 2004, which commits the community to leaving no physical trace and, where possible, leaving a place better than they found it.
Two quick corrections, because people muddle them. Burning Man's Leaving No Trace is not the same thing as the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics, a separate US organisation incorporated in 1994 with seven principles for wilderness recreation. Burning Man does not cite them, and there is no documented partnership between the two. Keep them apart.
Here is where MOOP stops being a litter lecture and becomes our subject. A loose sequin is MOOP the moment it falls off a garment. But it falling off is not an accident of the desert. It is a construction fault. A sequin that leaves the cloth was attached to fail, in the same way a hem that drops or a seam that opens was sewn to fail. When a garment sheds its trim across a field, that is not the wearer littering. That is the maker's decision arriving late. Loose feathers, cheap appliqué, glued-on shine: all of it is the workbench showing up in the dust.
What did the freshwater glitter study actually find?
Not what you were told. The received wisdom is to swap plastic glitter for biodegradable glitter and consider the problem solved. The strongest single study we have found says that swap did nothing.
Green, Jefferson, Boots and Stone published a 36-day freshwater study in the Journal of Hazardous Materials in 2020, using duckweed in a controlled tank system. Every glitter type they tested, including the biodegradable modified-regenerated-cellulose glitter, roughly halved root length and cut chlorophyll to about a third of the controls. The biodegradable one performed no better than the plastic one. On top of that, the biodegradable glitter alone drove a two-fold increase in an invasive species, the New Zealand mud snail, an effect the plastic glitter did not produce. The authors' own suggestion was that the harm might come from the coatings and dyes rather than the base material, but they offered that as a hypothesis, not a finding, and we will leave it as one.
We should be honest that the wider picture is mixed rather than closed. A 2024 Melbourne and Cambridge study found a different cellulose glitter had no significant effect on soil springtails, while conventional PET glitter cut their reproduction by 61%. A 2025 study from Cartagena found eco-glitter leachate was not acutely toxic to bacteria, but that the particles had barely biodegraded after 96 days. Not poisonous, and not going away either. The freshwater study has not been independently replicated in the same system. So this is a real, peer-reviewed, unfinished argument, not settled law. But it is more than enough to retire the idea that a jar labelled biodegradable is a clean conscience.
Why is "biodegradable" a word with no address?
Because degrading only means anything once you say where. Biodegradable is being used as a single, medium-agnostic marketing word when the science is organism-specific, material-specific and place-specific. Something certified to break down in freshwater tells you nothing about seawater, soil, or a landfill.
The standards themselves make this obvious. ASTM D6400 and ISO 14855 are industrial composting, high heat, about 180 days. TÜV's OK Biodegradable MARINE means at least 90% gone in seawater within six months. ISO 14851 and 14852 cover freshwater. A certificate in one medium implies nothing in another. That is precisely the gap the glitter evidence walked straight into: something that behaves in a duckweed tank is not thereby cleared for the sea, the soil or a skip.
The regulators already treat the bare word as suspect. The US FTC's Green Guides say an unqualified biodegradable claim needs evidence the whole product breaks down and returns to nature within a year of customary disposal. Because customary disposal usually means a landfill, which is dark, dry and anaerobic, the FTC treats an unqualified biodegradable claim on landfill-bound goods as inherently deceptive. The UK's Green Claims Code, published in 2021, runs the same logic through its six principles: a claim has to tell the whole story and stand on current, credible evidence. Biodegradable, on its own, tells you nothing until it tells you where.
Will we tell you natural fibre is clean? No.
No, because it is not, and saying it would be the exact greenwashing this whole argument is against. We work in natural fibres, so the tempting line is natural equals clean. The evidence does not support that line, and we are not going to hand you a comfortable one that a chemist could knock down in a sentence.
Start with the case for natural fibre, because it is real. Napper and Thompson in 2016 measured a standard 6kg wash releasing 728,789 fibres from acrylic, 496,030 from polyester and 137,951 from poly-cotton. Zambrano and colleagues in 2019 found that over 243 days in simulated aquatic conditions cotton biodegraded around 76% and rayon around 62%, while polyester managed under 5%.
Now the parts that ruin the easy story. That same Zambrano work found cotton degraded 77% in freshwater but only 49% in seawater, so cotton is biodegradable only conditionally, never as an absolute. Vassilenko and colleagues in 2021 found cotton and wool shed at 165 milligrams per kilogram per wash, statistically comparable to polyester's 161, and that shedding tracked fabric thickness and construction rather than fibre type on its own. And Stanton and colleagues in 2024 reported that natural fibres make up over 70% of all textile fibres recovered in environmental sampling, while barely being looked for, and called the assumption that natural fibres biodegrade harmlessly this field's most dangerous assumption. They noted that dyed, treated, mercerised cotton is, in their words, inherently unnatural, and that finishes slow degradation. A block-printed indigo cloth is not a leaf.
There is a warning here aimed squarely at our own labels too. In 2022 the FTC hit Kohl's and Walmart with civil penalties of 2.5 and 3 million dollars for selling rayon as bamboo and implying a clean process, when turning bamboo into rayon uses toxic chemicals. A textile is only bamboo if it is mechanically processed bamboo fibre. Once it has been chemically regenerated, the honest name is rayon made from bamboo. In late 2025 the UK's ASA upheld greenwashing rulings against both Nike and Lacoste over unqualified sustainable claims, even where genuine reductions existed, because the word implied no lifecycle harm at all. We would rather learn that from someone else's penalty than our own.
Durability: the only environmental claim worth making from the workbench
The lever was never the label on the fibre. It is construction and longevity, and that is the one claim we can stand behind with our hands on the cloth.
A densely woven, well-finished garment sheds less, because shedding tracks construction and thickness, not the name of the fibre. More to the point, it survives. It goes to the next festival, and the one after that, and the one after that, and you do not buy a replacement, which is the single largest saving there is, because the greenest thing is the thing that did not need remaking. This is the same argument as the tent, read from the other end. The tent fails because it was specified to fail after one weekend. A garment lasts because someone at a cutting table decided it should, and paid for the extra stitch, the tighter weave, the trim sewn to stay.
That is a claim we can make without reaching for a number nobody can source, and this field is full of those. The tent count from the Association of Independent Festivals stands up. The glitter study stands up as one honest study. Durability needs neither, because it is the property you can hold in your hand and test with your own weight leaning on a seam. Take the tent home. Buy the garment that outlives the festival. The cleanest object on the field at eight in the morning is the one that is still standing, still worn, and still coming back next year.
